For Publishers
Republishing Guidelines
Our reporting is free to republish under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. Here's how to do it right.
What's allowed
- Republishing our stories in full online or in print, at no cost.
- Using the copy-paste HTML offered at the bottom of every story — it includes the byline, date, and attribution boilerplate.
- Lightly editing for house style, length, or clarity (see limits below).
- Quoting excerpts freely in other reporting, with credit.
- Sharing our stories on social media and in newsletters.
What's not allowed
- Commercial resale. You may not sell our stories or bundle them into paid products. "NC" in the license stands for non-commercial.
- Substantive rewrites or translations without our permission. The "ND" (no derivatives) clause means you can't reframe our reporting, remix it into a new piece, or translate it into another language without asking first. Email us and we'll usually say yes.
- Using our stories to train machine-learning models.
- Republishing without attribution or without a link back to the original.
- Using our photos, graphics, or illustrations without a separate license.
Attribution template
Every republished story should carry a byline of "by Rogue Advocates" and a short note at the top or bottom linking back to the original. The copy-paste HTML we provide already includes this. If you write your own attribution, use this template:
<p>
This story was originally published by
<a href="https://rogueadvocates.org">Rogue Advocates</a>
and is republished here under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license.
Read the original at
<a href="https://rogueadvocates.org/newsroom/[slug]">rogueadvocates.org</a>.
</p>Canonical link (SEO)
Please add a <link rel="canonical"> tag pointing to the original Rogue Advocates URL in the <head> of your republished page. This tells search engines that our version is the source of record and keeps both your site and ours out of duplicate-content penalties.
<link rel="canonical" href="https://rogueadvocates.org/newsroom/[slug]" />Image handling
Photos and graphics are not included in the republishing license. Many of our images are licensed from third parties or show identifiable people who granted permission only for use on our site. The copy-paste HTML strips all images automatically.
If you want to license a specific photo for your republication, email info@rogueadvocates.org with the story URL and the image you have in mind. We'll tell you whether it's available and on what terms.
Edits, translations, and excerpts
Under "ND" (no derivatives), you may:
- Fix typos and light copy-edit for your house style.
- Trim the piece for length by removing paragraphs — do not rewrite them.
- Change the headline to match your style sheet (keep the meaning intact).
- Excerpt a few paragraphs in other coverage with a link back.
You may not:
- Translate the piece into another language without asking.
- Change the substantive reporting, framing, or conclusions.
- Combine our work with other content in a way that creates a new story.
If you want to translate or adapt something, just ask — we almost always say yes to good-faith requests from other newsrooms and nonprofits.
Corrections and updates
If we update or correct a story, the canonical version on our site will change. You are welcome (but not required) to pull the update into your republication. If we issue a material correction, we'll email publishers we know about and post a correction notice on the original story.
If you need to pull a story from your site because we've unpublished it, please do so promptly when you hear from us.
Newsletters and email
You may reprint full stories in your newsletter under the same terms — attribution, link back, no commercial resale, no image use without a separate license. The copy-paste HTML works in most newsletter platforms, but you may need to inline the styles or strip our <style> block depending on the tool.
Social media
Share away. Quote excerpts, link to our stories, tag us — all fine, no permission needed. We're on the channels listed on our contact page.
